Clearly explained.

Beyond the eye chart

An eye exam should give you more than a prescription.

Vision changes are only part of the picture. A comprehensive exam helps us understand how your eyes see, focus, work together, and stay healthy. Many eye conditions develop quietly. Regular exams allow Dr. Mai to identify subtle changes early—and give you straightforward guidance about what comes next.

Why thorough matters

A routine visit that changed everything.

A teenage patient came in expecting a standard checkup. His prescription was low, but his vision was significantly reduced—an inconsistency Dr. Mai knew deserved a closer look.

A careful retinal examination revealed severe bleeding. Dr. Mai arranged an immediate specialist referral, and the cause was ultimately found to be a brain tumor. The patient received surgery right away.

The details matter. A prescription check alone would not have found it. A thoughtful, complete examination did.

Individual outcomes vary. This experience illustrates the value of comprehensive care and is not typical of every exam.

What to expect during your eye exam

1 | Your vision goals

We start with what you are noticing, what you need your eyes to do, and any health concerns.

2 | Clear, precise vision

We measure how you see and carefully refine your prescription for comfortable everyday vision.

3 | Eye coordination

We check how your eyes focus and work together—especially if screens, reading, or headaches are a concern.

4 | Complete eye health

We examine the front and back of your eyes, including the retina and optic nerve, for early signs of disease.

5 | A plan you understand

Dr. Mai reviews the findings in plain language and recommends only the care you actually need.

IS IT TIME FOR AN EXAM?

Come in for changes you notice—and the ones you cannot.

Schedule an eye exam if it has been a year or two, or sooner if you are experiencing new symptoms.

✓ Blurry or fluctuating vision

✓ Headaches or eye strain

✓ Long hours on digital screens

✓ Diabetes or high blood pressure

✓ A family history of eye disease

✓ New glasses or contact lens needs

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET AN EYE EXAM?

Your ideal schedule is personal.

Many adults benefit from an exam every one to two years. Dr. Mai may recommend more frequent visits based on your age, symptoms, eye health, medications, or medical history.

Eye exam questions, clearly answered.
