Dr. Loi Thanh Mai, O.D.
Dr. Mai studied at UCLA and earned his Doctor of Optometry from Western University of Health Sciences. He is certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease.
His advanced clinical training allows him to diagnose and manage many medical eye conditions in-office, including infections, corneal abrasions, inflammation, diabetes-related eye disease, and glaucoma.
As the owner of Luminous Optometry, Dr. Mai personally performs every eye exam. Patients often appreciate the time he takes to explain what he sees, what it means, and what the next steps are in clear, understandable terms.

Your Santa Ana optometrist
Luminous Optometry is an independent practice on East 4th Street in Santa Ana, a few minutes from the 5 freeway with free parking directly outside. We are the eye doctor for families across the city — from Downtown Santa Ana and Floral Park through French Park, Park Santiago, Washington Square, Riverview West, Madison Park and South Coast Metro.
Patients also travel to us from Tustin and Tustin Ranch just east of here, Orange and Old Towne to the north, Garden Grove to the west, and Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley and Irvine to the south. Most come for the same reason: an unhurried comprehensive eye exam with a doctor who explains what he found, rather than the fastest available appointment.
Whether you need a routine eye exam, a contact lens fitting, a diabetic retinal screening, treatment for a red or painful eye, or a new pair of glasses, it is all handled here by the same optometrist — and your record builds year over year instead of starting from scratch each time.
Frequently asked questions
Once a year for most adults. Sooner if you wear contact lenses, have diabetes, are being monitored for glaucoma, or you have noticed a change in your vision. Children should be examined at around six months, age three, before kindergarten, and then every school year.
We accept VSP, EyeMed and Medi-Cal. Tell us which you have when you book and we will verify your eligibility and allowances before your appointment. If you have no vision coverage, our $119 a year membership plan includes your annual comprehensive exam.
Often, yes. We deliberately hold slots for urgent problems rather than booking the day solid. Call 714-542-2226 and describe what is happening — if we cannot fit you in, we will tell you immediately and say where to go instead.
Plan for about an hour. That covers pre-testing, your time with Dr. Mai, and going through what he found. Choosing frames afterwards adds another twenty minutes or so.
Dilation is used whenever a clear view of the retina matters. It leaves you light-sensitive and blurry for close work for four to six hours. Most people drive home fine, but bring sunglasses and consider a driver if you know you react strongly.
Yes. We see a great many Spanish-speaking families and you are welcome to have your appointment in Spanish.
Yes. Your glasses prescription is yours and we give you a copy after the exam, no questions asked. Contact lens prescriptions are released once the fitting is finalized.
No. You can book directly with us for both routine and medical eye care. If something needs a surgeon or a retinal specialist, Dr. Mai arranges that referral himself.
